Ronda is a hill town, situated one hour's drive inland from the Costa del Sol. It is one of the oldest towns in Spain. Its origins are prehistoric (visit the nearby Pileta Cave), and Roman remains can be found in the area known locally as Ronda la Vieja (Old Ronda). The town is famed for the hundred metre deep, steep-sided gorge which cuts the town in half. The 'New bridge', constructed at the end of the eighteenth century, is the symbol of the town. The bullring is the oldest in Spain (1785) and houses an interesting museum. There are numerous other historic monuments and buildings that can be visited. The market town of Ronda is always a favourite with travellers, not just because of its history or for the shopping, but for its ambience, relaxing pavement cafes and fine restaurants. The Serranía de Ronda, as the name suggests, is the beautiful countryside that surrounds Ronda. This includes the Natural Park, the 'Sierra de las Nieves', the mountainous slopes of Sierra Bermeja and the Valley of the river Genal. Numerous white villages are found scattered around the valley, some well known, others remote and rarely visited by tourists. The region contains several fine examples of the famous "white villages". Those in this area, however, are particularly noted. The interest they create is such that the tourist board has published suggested tours, some of which pass by Hotel El Horcajo. Full details can be obtained from our reception. The Central route links Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema, Villaluenga del Rosario, Benaocaz, Ubrique, Benamahoma and El Bosque. The Eastern route links Ronda, Montejaque, Benaojan, Jimena de Libar, Atajate, Benadalid, Algatocin and Cortes de la Frontera. The Northern route links Puerto Serrano, Algodonales, El Gastor, Setenil de las Bodegas, Alcala del Valle, Torre Alhamaquime and Olvera. |
